Ibn Khurdadhbeh

Ibn Khurdadhbeh
Arab geographer (died ca. 912) whose Routes and Kingdoms (completed ca. 885) offers an important description of the theme (q.v.) system in the ninth century, along with details about thematic troop strengths and pay. The book also offers precise information on the cities, road system, and forts of Asia Minor (q.v.). For example, it provides details about the main road that went from the Cilician Gates (q.v.) to the fort of Lulun, and thence, in stages, across Asia Minor to the Sea of Marmara and Constantinople (qq.v.).
